So, here we are finally in the Summer term! It was brilliant to see everyone return to school in uniform, ready to start the term ahead and we even had new signs to greet us at Dean Street..
We kicked off the new term with the practice run for our Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award. Our intrepid explorers set off in glorious sunshine to the Peak District where they spent one night under the stars and returned to us with aching limbs but great tans. Mr Hopkins has the details..
In the past week our Spring Brook Academy Key Stage 4 have completed the school’s first ever Duke of Edinburgh’s Expedition!
This was their Bronze practice expedition and involved walking 6.5 miles on the first day carrying everything we needed..
..setting up camp..
..cooking..
..washing up and then packing up the following day to walk another 3.5 miles..
We did this on and around the Monsal Trail in Derbyshire and on the hottest April days in 70 years! Everyone who took part did amazingly well. The boys were helping each other out carrying each other’s bags, sharing water supplies and helping to set up each other’s tents which, considering we are an SEMH provision, is a massive achievement for our pupils..
We stopped along the way to take in the fantastic scenery, look at the history of the area and view the old train tunnels and even went out on a small night walk to explore the local river..
Having completed our practice we now can’t wait for the assessed expedition in July..
Well done everyone!
Over the holidays I also met with our building contractors to sign off the final drawings for Springboard. We are into the 12 month countdown now and it really is beginning to take shape which is really exciting!
We have lots of exciting events happening this term including the full Bronze D of E expedition, the Year 11 residential and Record of Achievement. Let’s hope the sun shines for all of it !!!!!!!!!!!
