As we are ploughing through December I thought I’d take a moment to sit down and write another blog. I haven’t written one for a while. This is because the pace of education is sometimes like a whirlwind with everything that we have to fit in…. Last night Mr Southerington, Mr Arnold and I had our full governors meeting. It was a pleasure to reflect and share good news about our schools with our governors. If you are interested in becoming at governor at Spring Brook Academy please get in touch, we would love to hear from you.
As I sit here at my desk writing this blog, the note on my desk says “No matter how busy you get, always take a minute to appreciate the simple things.” I have seen this this week and indeed over the weeks here at Spring Brook Upper from our young people. We have had our young people showing empathy, kindness, using good manners, earning respect points and trying really hard with their school work despite challenges that come along. We have seen a great display of resilience and compassion also. Sometimes our young people with ADHD, Autism and other needs are really misunderstood in the community. It really isn’t difficult to see the good in them.
Let’s have a look at what Miss Davies has been up to with the Year 7 class this week. We’ve had a reward trip…

..a visit to Oldham Market to get wool to make Christmas decorations..
..and food technology..
Boys….I wonder why those shortbread biscuits didn’t make it to my office for a taste? They have also been learning some new skills..
Last week the SBA1 boys entered the DT room – they were very excited! They met with John who explained that the boys were going to make figures. They started by making a class mascot, Jerry, so they could get used to the equipment, especially the hot glue gun. Kyle has now started making his own dinosaur by using wood as a skeleton and plasticine for skin. Similarly, Dawud has started making his very own dragon! Taylor and Donovan are both very excited about creating their own designs next week. I can’t wait to see how the boys progress throughout the half term. Well done boys! Miss Davies.
This week Miss Davies started introducing meditation in a morning. After only 3 days, this is the result – even staff coming in and out of the room didn’t disturb the boys..
The boys have also enjoyed reiki treatments in the relaxation room with Miss Mellor..
..and more guided meditation sessions..
The boys made reindeer paintings this week in creative with Miss Mellor..

Thank you Miss Davies you’ve done a great job this week. It is nice to see the relaxation sessions taking place with the support of Miss Mellor also.
The weather hasn’t put the boys off and they enjoyed an outdoor activity in Park Bridge where they worked really well as a team to get across the stream using wood..
..and an afternoon walk around Tandle Hill..
Spring Brook were represented this week at City. The Year 7 students did us proud with their positive behaviour and sporting attitudes..
Thank you boys! Letters have gone home to all our Year 8s with the first details of our incredible Disneyland Paris residential in June 2020, please return the reply slip or contact us if you have any questions.
A special get well wish from all of your Spring Brook Family goes to Kian T. Kian has spent some time in hospital this week with a broken leg. I went to visit Kian before he had his operation. He truly is a brave young man. We all wish you a speedy recovery Kian from Miss Rodgers and the team x
Can I just remind everyone that it is Christmas lunch on Wednesday 11th December. We will have a ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ also on the 11th but apart from that, every day please remember to wear full school uniform.
Enjoy your weekend,
Miss Rodgers
